Elio Altare shook up the world of Barolo by introducing international winemaking techniques, such as his use of French barriques. While consistently raising eyebrows and skirting controversy, he continued to maintain an extremely high standard in all of the wines produced at the Altare estate. In yet another example of trailblazing within the family, his daughter Silvia has taken the mantle by continuing to raise the bar for quality, purchasing more land, and taking the Altare name to great heights.
